Pregnant woman rescues toddler: A child safety group says it’s the 41st carjacking this year to involve a vehicle that had a child inside when it was stolen.
A pregnant woman from Illinois is currently recovering in hospital after being run over by carjackers who stole her vehicle with her 2-year-old son still inside.
The woman, who is six months pregnant, had just arrived home in the northern Chicago suburb of Libertyville and went back outside to retrieve her 2-year-old son when a white BMW pulled up behind her car.
The male passenger in the BMW got out and attempted to steal her car while she fought to protect her son. The carjackers attacked the woman, knocked her to the ground, and drove off with her car and son.
As they fled the scene, one of the carjackers ran over the woman, causing serious injuries. Fortunately, the child was found in a parking lot and taken to safety.
This incident highlights the importance of never leaving children unattended in vehicles, even for a short period of time. According to Kids and Car Safety, 41 children have been left alone in cars that were subsequently stolen this year alone. While the victims often survive, the emotional trauma for all involved is significant.
Regardless of the neighborhood or income level, thieves look for opportunities to steal vehicles with keys inside, and often don’t realize that there is a child inside until after they have driven away.
To keep children safe, parents and caretakers can follow some simple tips, such as using drive-thru windows and curbside pickup when possible, and keeping the doors locked and keys on their person when pumping gas with children in the car.
Most importantly, never leave a child alone in an unattended vehicle, as it only takes a few seconds for someone to act. Businesses are often willing to accommodate parents in protecting their children, so don’t hesitate to ask for help if needed.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential danger and trauma that can occur when leaving children unattended in cars. By following these simple tips and remaining vigilant, we can work towards keeping our children safe from harm.
